Is it legal? Yes! It’s a federal law (Durbin Amendment) and legal in all 50 states. The formal name is “Cash Discount Pricing.”
How does this work? It’s easy! You simply post a notice in your business, on your menu, on your website, etc. saying that all prices are “Cash Discount Prices.” Any buyers using their credit cards or their debit cards pay your “Cash Discount Price” (shelf price, menu price, etc…) plus a credit card processing fee (typically 3.5% to 4%).
Example: Using a 3.5% processing fee (paid by your buyer): Let’s say the price of your item or service is $20. Anyone paying cash will pay $20. Your credit and debit card customers pay $20 plus a 70¢ processing fee. We transfer $20 into your account.
Do I have to change my prices? No! You don’t have to change your prices on your shelf, menu or other places.
